Hilton Head Island man points stick. Cop draws gun

A Hilton Head Island man found himself facing a pistol and Taser on Monday evening after refusing to obey commands from Beaufort County Sheriff’s deputies who wanted him to drop a large stick he was twirling and pointing toward the cops.

Deputies responded to a call about a family fight in the area of Amelia Commons and discovered a man “standing in the road with a large stick in his hand,” according to a sheriff’s office report released Tuesday.

The deputy said the man “began twirling (the stick) around and pointing it at me, acting like it was a rifle.”

The deputy drew his pistol and demanded the man drop his stick, the report said.

Another deputy arrived “and pull(ed) out his Taser in attempts to defuse the situation,” according to the report.

The stick-wielding man fled until an “unidentified individual was able to walk up to him and hug him,” the report said.

At that point, deputies were able to cuff the man. He was charged with a misdemeanor county of disorderly conduct, according to the report.
