A Bluffton man has been charged with cocaine possession after he was pulled over while driving on Friday afternoon.

Tyrone Simmons, 36, was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center after he was pulled over for allegedly making an improper turn from Buck Island Road onto Bluffton Parkway around 6:50 p.m., according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

During the stop, Simmons appeared “very nervous and his hands shook while providing (a deputy) with his documentation,” the report said.

As the deputy checked the vehicle’s license plates, dispatch advised that Simmons was “a known member of the Buck Island gang,” the report said.

The deputy then asked Simmons to exit the vehicle and Simmons “appeared to be trying to leave the area if given the opportunity,” the report said.

He was placed in handcuffs and a K-9 was brought to the scene to search Simmons’ vehicle.

The dog alerted to an empty can in a cup holder and a clear plastic bag was found inside that contained a white, powdery substance, the report said.

The powder tested positive for cocaine at the scene, the report said.

Simmons was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and was released on Saturday, according to the jail’s website.
