Savannah woman charged in Bluffton after crashing stolen vehicle

A Savannah woman was taken to jail after she allegedly provided deputies with a false identity after she stole a vehicle and got into a car crash.

The woman was charged with driving without a license, providing false information at a traffic stop and possession of a stolen vehicle worth $2,000 or less - all misdemeanors - on Saturday around 3:20 p.m. after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash on Gateway Village Road in Bluffton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

Two deputies were called by the S.C. Highway Patrol to investigate the 2013 gray Toyota Corolla involved in the collision and learned it had been reported stolen through Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police on Oct. 27.

The owner of the Corolla told deputies the vehicle had been taken by the woman without his permission, the report said.

The female driver gave the deputies an incorrect name and said she borrowed the vehicle and a cell phone from a woman whose boyfriend was the theft victim.

The other woman’s name she provided for loaning her the vehicle just happened to be her real name, the report said.

She assumed the false identity for more than an hour before admitting her real name to deputies, the report said.

She was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and was being held on a bond of over $2,900 as of Monday afternoon, according to the jail’s website.
