Hilton Head Island man to would-be burglar: Can I get you a drink?
Two men rennovating a home from Hurricane Matthew damages on Hilton Head Island got an unexpected visit Thursday morning.
According to a police report filed with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, a disoriented man, identified by officers as Shane Holmes, began to bang on the door of the residence at 6:30 a.m. and broke a window pane.
When one of the residents confronted Holmes and ordered him to leave, he refused. The resident is quoted in the police report stating, “Holmes looked very disoriented, so he grabbed him a soda from the fridge, gave it to him in hopes that he would just leave.”
After Holmes continued to stay in the home, the resident returned to his bedroom and called 911.
Officers arrived on the scene and found Holmes “peaking around the corner of the staircase, gesturing for deputies to be quiet,” according to the report.
Deputies detained Holmes and offered him two water bottles before EMS transported him to Hilton Head Medical Center. The residents reported they didn’t notice anything missing and officers attempted to contact the homeowner.
The report states that Holmes was found to be under an extreme amount of illegal narcotics and admitted for observations. After becoming coherent, deputies arrested Holmes for malicious injury to property and trespassing.
