I am I must admit enchanted with France. My maiden name is Paris, I had an English grandmother and a Swiss grandfather who was born in Vevey, Switzerland, where French was spoken.

When my grandparents came to visit, we heard and were urged to speak the French we knew and the “king’s English.” It could be quite a strain to be so proper, but it only lasted three days as my grandparents were always off to somewhere exotic.

Since we have been closeted at home I have been reading all sorts of things and checking out many websites. I came across recipes for “galettes,” a square version of crepes that hail from Brittany, made from whole wheat flour.

I decided that I was going to make them one day and, donning my bandanna, went in search of galette ingredients.

Besides paper towels and toilet paper, whole wheat flour was nowhere to be found. It is amazing, I thought, “Can there be others who might be making galettes in Bluffton?”

Finally one day I scored a 5-pound bag of King Arthur whole wheat flour and nipped home for a glass of vino to celebrate.

The recipe is really simple, but it is rather tricky to flip them over but I pressed on because I was on a mission.

Once nicely flipped, a slice or two of ham is added, then an egg is cracked and placed on the ham sunny side up.

Next, one has to fold the edges of the galette, making a square envelope all the while keeping the egg yolk intact.

By this time I had a family drooling with anticipation, “egging” me on. Of course we had also been nipping heavily on the vino so I suppose it was a miracle of sorts that I produced my breton supper.

You can find tutorials on the internet that will have you mesmerized watching different people cooking these fabulous morsels ... I watched for quite some time and it was fun.

The next day my daughter Tat arrived with 16 little vials of perfume she had ordered from Paris. Tat loves Tocca perfume and a scent called “Stella” that smells like oranges. We were trying to find a match in a fun way.

So we opened the little bottles one by one and we opened another bottle of vino to sip between sniffs and by the time all 16 little vials were opened we smelled like an orange orchard in Florida. Tat decided to stick with her Tocca and I poured what was left in the little vials in the laundry water and now we all smell good.

‘Tour de Bluffton’

I had an interesting thought. Twenty or so years ago I arranged for a “Tour de Bluffton” and an ice cream social. It was not a race but a leisurely bicycle ride from the corner of Bridge and Calhoun streets to Brighton Beach and back ... sort of like “cutting the beach” done many years ago.

If the virus is contained, I have an idea.

Father’s Day is June 21 and I thought that perhaps we could do the ride that afternoon.

I am hoping we could park food trucks on Calhoun Street and other food vendors too. If the ride was from 4 to 6 p.m., church would be over so parking would be no problem.

The food vendors would be charged $50 each for the afternoon, which is very reasonable.

If this might be something the town would like, we could have the bike ride every Father’s Day.
