Beaufort DragonBoat race raises over $65,000; winners announced
The third annual DragonBoat Race at the Beaufort Water Festival exceeded its fundraising goal, bringing in more than $65,000, race organizers report.
Money raised by DragonBoat Race Day goes to support cancer patients and survivors with needs not covered by usual means.
Over 700 paddlers, ages 16 to 80, converged on Henry Chambers Waterfront Park on July 25 for the event. A total of 32 teams each composed of 22 paddlers manned 42-foot-long dragon boat in a series of races during the daylong event.
The event drew teams from a five-state area and an estimated 3,000 spectators to the seawall for the afternoon races, which culminated in the afternoon awards ceremony honoring division and fundraising winners.
