What’s that you hear now that MCAS has reopened a runway?
A Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort runway reopened Tuesday after months of maintenance.
The runway, 05/23 running northeast to southwest, had been closed for resurfacing work beginning in March. The base’s flights had been taking off from an alternate runway running northwest to southeast.
Work included replacing parts of the runway, repainting carrier landing markings and a new, short takeoff lane for the F-35, according to an MCAS release.
The new flight patterns led to more jet noise over Beaufort and renewed calls for an alternate landing field. Flight patterns on the alternate runway will return to normal, a release said.
