Parris Island cancels 4th of July events
Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island has canceled its annual 4th of July celebration, citing the across-the-board budget cuts known as sequestration.
The cancellation will "minimize the fiscal impact on vital programs affected by sequestion," according to a news release.
"The commanding general did not make this decision lightly as she understands how important this event is to the service members and the local community," the release says.
The Parris Island Marine Band will perform at the Sands Beach in Port Royal at 7:30 p.m. July 4. The town will have a fireworks display at about 9 p.m.
