Wreaths Across America to honor veterans, their stories with free exhibit in Beaufort

A traveling museum coming to Beaufort on Nov. 6 honors veterans, their sacrifices and their stories.

Traveling the country in a 48-foot trailer, the Mobile Education Exhibit comes from Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit started by Worcester Wreath Company owner Morrill Worcester in 1992 to lay wreaths at Christmastime for fallen veterans at Arlington National Cemetery. Wreaths Across America partnered with Beaufort County Veterans Affairs to bring the museum here, according to a county news release.

The mobile exhibit will be free and open to the public from noon until 5:30 p.m. at the Beaufort County Administration Building on Ribaut Road.

The purpose of the mobile exhibit is to teach kids about the sacrifices made by veterans in their communities and communities all over the country and to share the stories of those veterans, officials said in the press release.

“Over the last two years, we feel this exhibit has taken on even more meaning by providing the opportunity for people to safely participate in something that is both educational and inspiring while supporting and giving back to the communities it visits,” said Karen Worcester, Wreaths Across America executive director.

The trailer left Maine, the birthplace of the Worcester Wreath Company, in February 2021. Since then, it has gone all over the country. Toward the front of the trailer, visitors can view three computer screens with Wreaths Across America locations and frequently asked questions about the organization. Also on display are the organization’s mission and plans for the future. The mobile museum also features a 24-person screening room where visitors can watch short films and participate in interactive exhibits.

“The exhibit serves as a mobile museum, educating visitors about the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes as well as to serve as an official ‘welcome home’ station for our nation’s Vietnam Veterans,” Don Queeney, director of transportation and the Mobile Education Exhibit for Wreaths Across America, said on the exhibit’s website.
