Expect to hear more of the ‘sound of freedom’ in Port Royal and Beaufort next week

The so-called “sound of freedom” will be extra liberating — or annoying— next week, thanks to visiting Marines who will be conducting noisy training operations in the Lowcountry.

The Marines are apologizing in advance.

Units from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina will be conducting training operations at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in Port Royal Monday through Friday, Parris Island said Friday, warning families at Parris Island and its off-base neighbors about increased noise.

Throughout the week, scenario-based exercises will be conducted on the base and neighboring waterways. Some of the exercises will involve aerial operations, including the use of rotary aircraft and unmanned aerial drones.

While apologizing, the based added: “Please know that the sound you hear is the sound of freedom.”
