Beaufort man arrested after allegedly pointing his gun at a deputy
A 39-year-old Beaufort man was arrested late Saturday night after an incident in which he allegedly pointed his handgun at a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputy.
Charles Brown allegedly pointed his handgun at one of the deputies responding to a shots fired call for service around 11 p.m. Saturday, according to Capt. Bob Bromage of the Sheriff’s Office.
A shot was fired by one of the deputies, and Brown was wounded in his left hand. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is actively investigating the case to determine the origin of the wound, Bromage said.
Deputies heard gunshots when they arrived in the neighborhood and determined the shots were coming from a Windsor Road residence in the Bonaire Circle South neighborhood, Bromage said.
Brown was treated at Beaufort Memorial Hospital for his injury before he was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center. He is charged with pointing a firearm at another person, a felony, with a bond set at $175,000.
In the wake of multiple shooting deaths across the country, particularly those involving law enforcement officers, Bromage said Sheriff’s Office deputies are “careful and patient” and that they “remain vigilant, situationally aware and extremely cautious.”
He added that he believes there is an “excellent relationship” between the community and local agencies: “We appreciate the outpouring of support for law enforcement.”
