The buck stops at Sonic after man attempts to use fake bill

Somebody tried to use movie money at the Robert Smalls Parkway Sonic on Sunday.

Around 10:30 p.m., a 30- to 35-year-old black male asked for change for a $100 bill, according to Deputy Chief Dale McDorman with Beaufort Police Department. It turned out the money was fake and had the words “motion picture use only” printed on it, McDorman said.

When a Sonic employee took the bill inside the building, before giving the suspect any change, the suspect left the area in a dark, two-door vehicle, McDorman said.

“Officers were unable to locate a suspect, and the business did not wish to pursue the incident any further,” he said.

There was no video available of the incident, and the fake bill has been collected as evidence. McDorman said the investigation is active.
