What dad doesn’t want this weekend: A traffic ticket

The Beaufort Police Department will step up its traffic game this weekend.

The department will participate in the multi-state Border to Border campaign that focuses on driver safety awareness and state traffic laws, especially on state highways. The campaign begins Friday and runs through Father’s Day.

Traffic Officer Marvin Tabb-Walker will on the lookout - likely on US 21 - for dangerous or distracted drivers. His goal: “Target Zero,” or zero deaths from vehicle collisions, Lt. Doug Kadas said.

Speed and inattentiveness are among the main causes of crashes and collisions, Kadas said. Anyone who’s stopped will get information on the effects of speeding and texting. And, of course, a ticket is a distinct possibility.

Border to Border is among a series of campaigns the department will participate in throughout the year, including the Click it or Ticket campaign.

A Highway Safety grant the department received in January pays for a full-time officer and a vehicle for a year to participate in such campaigns.
