Beaufort County students honored at international science fair
Two Beaufort County students were honored last week at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Az.
Maile Paulmier of H.E. McCracken Middle School in Bluffton and Victoria Hamlin of Hilton Head Island High School participated in the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair after earning top prizes in the local 2016 Sea Island Regional Science Fair.
Paulmier won fourth place and $500 in the Materials Science division for her project, “Comparative Strength Analysis of an Artificial Monofilament Passive Fiber Skeletal Muscle vs. a Linear Actuator.”
Hamlin won an Academic Excellence Scholarship from West Virginia University for her project, “Design of a Sounding Rocket for Maximum Altitude.”
The international competition attracted about 1,700 regional champions from 75 countries.
“To have not one, but two of our students earn recognition at the international science fair is terrific,” superintendent Jeff Moss said. “We’re very proud of both of them.”
