Laurel Bay sewage spills into Broad River
Sewage from Laurel Bay spilled into the Broad River, Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority said in a news release Friday.
The spill is being monitored by the agency and S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control for possible side effects. The wastewater overflow occurred about 6.5 miles west of the Broad River Bridge and was attributed to a blockage in the sewer system, the release said.
Sewer Authority crews responded to clean up and repair the problem. Signs will be posted in the area to inform the public of the spill.
DHEC is monitoring the area for possible effects on shellfish harvesting and will issue advisories if necessary, the release said. Anyone who sees a spill is asked to call BJJWSA at 843-987-9200.
