Burton man accused of providing alcohol in deadly Beaufort house party
A Burton man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the alcohol-related death of a Beaufort teenager, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Trong Duc Le is accused of purchasing liquor and beer for 18-year-old William Thompson and two other minors who were hospitalized following a house party on Parris Island Gateway the night of April 9 and early April 10.
Capt. Bob Bromage of the Sheriff’s Office could not say how the suspect knew the minors, only that there was “an association.”
Le was not a resident of the home where the party happened, and the homeowners have not been charged at this time, Bromage said.
Thompson was a senior at Whale Branch Early College High School. He was found unresponsive on April 10 about 1:50 a.m., a few hours after coming home intoxicated from the party. Deputies later found several other underage partygoers at the Parris Island Gateway home, including two other 18-year-old boys passed out on couches, officials said at the time.
Earlier this week, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office received an autopsy report from the Medical University of South Carolina indicating Thompson died from the toxic effects of alcohol.
On Friday, Sheriff’s Office investigators met with a magistrate and obtained a warrant for Le’s arrest.
Le turned himself in late Friday afternoon at the Sheriff’s Office and was arrested without incident. He was being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center on Friday evening. His bond had not been set.
