USC Beaufort to graduate one of largest-ever classes, honor former congressman

The University of South Carolina Beaufort will graduate one of its largest ever classes this week.

On Friday, 340 members of the Class of 2016 will walk across the stage on Helen and Brantley Harvey Plaza at the Hilton Head Gateway Campus. Commencement ceremonies begin at 6 p.m., according to a news release from the university.

Former U.S. Congressman Bob Inglis Sr., will deliver the keynote address and will receive an honorary doctorate.

Also receiving an honorary doctorate is Louise Miller Cohen, of Hilton Head Island. Cohen is a teacher, Gullah storyteller and preserver of the Gullah culture and heritage. She served the community as a health education and action aide for what is now Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, assisting her neighbors in signing up for Social Security benefits and social services.

Individuals who are not able to attend commencement can watch the ceremony live on the university’s website beginning at 5:50 p.m., when the academic procession begins.

The web address is www.uscb.edu/commencementlive.
