Burton fugitive arrested at Beaufort motel

After months of evading law enforcement, a Burton man wanted since October for violating a court order was arrested early Friday morning at the Beaufort Econolodge motel.

Brian Colby Fillinger, 24, was arrested in connection with abandoning a drug court program last fall, the Beaufort Police Department reported Friday morning. Fillinger was sentenced to the program after pleading guilty to three counts of breaking into motor vehicles in 2014.

The goal of the drug court is to allow nonviolent offenders to avoid convictions if they successfully complete treatment programs that address the underlying problems that cause them to commit crimes.

Fillinger became a fugitive about seven months ago, however, when he failed to complete his sentence.

Fillinger was arrested without incident Friday at the motel on Boundary Street following a joint investigation by the Beaufort Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service Southeastern Regional Fugitive Task Force.

He was listed Friday morning as an inmate in the Beaufort County Detention Center.
