A mother and her 4-month-old child remain hospitalized in serious condition after a single-car crash on St. Helena Island on Wednesday morning in which their sedan hit a tree.

The crash happened on Fripp Island Road around 11 a.m., according to Scott Harris, spokesman for the Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District.

The wreck happened after the 25-year-old driver lost control while traveling at a high rate of speed, Harris said.

The vehicle left the roadway, struck a culvert, went airborne and hit the tree before it came to a rest on its roof on the road.

When rescue crews arrived at the scene, the driver was pinned in the back seat of the car, and her baby was lying outside the vehicle with a broken femur and serious head trauma, Harris said.

The infant was flown to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston from Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The driver, also in serious condition, was taken to Beaufort Memorial.

The crash is under investigation.
