Perhaps you caught the debate about the pop superstar online this past weekend. Beaufort artist Mary Thibault posted a photo on Facebook of her Bay Street gallery’s guestbook, with what appeared to be Swift’s signature.

“We had a surprise guest in Thibault Gallery. Can you guess who it was?!?!?” Thibault posted with the photo.

Thibault, who owns the gallery with her husband, Eric, was working in the studio in the back of the gallery April 14. Many customers came in and out, and she tries to greet them all, she said.

But she was also working.

They didn’t notice the signature until a customer pointed it out the next day.

“We got real excited at first, and we were racking our brains,” Thibault said Monday. “Could she have walked in here incognito without someone recognizing her? We thought someone else would have seen her in Beaufort.”

She posted a photo of the signature to her personal page and the gallery’s page, but no one reported any other sightings.

The autograph resembles one printed on some Swift merchandise. But based on photos of items Swift has signed, it seems the country music star turned global icon prefers to pen only her first name with a heart.

As some online comments pointed out, Swift has been at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California and Tweeted multiple times from the event starting April 15. But the entry in the Thibault Gallery guestbook was not dated, and an April 14 visit would have still allowed Swift time to fly to California.

And more people have been visiting Beaufort.

At the Thibaults’ Bay Street gallery, actors Tom Berenger and Andie MacDowell have been among the customers.

So could it be? Maybe. Or perhaps it is a late April Fools’ day gag or just a ploy meant to start this buzz.

As Swift sings in her hit song “Shake It Off” — Fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake. An early customer Monday joked that they were going to sign the guestbook as Elvis Presley.

“My husband and I are born and raised here in Beaufort, and we are amazed at how many tourists come to our sweet little town from all over the world,” Thibault said. “Whoever’s doing it, her signature is very nice.”
