Grays Hill home damaged in Saturday’s second Burton-area fire
A Grays Hill resident kept a kitchen fire in check with a garden hose until firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze Saturday evening.
Crews called to a home on Hampton Drive just after 8 p.m. found a family on the front lawn and black smoke billowing from their front door, Burton Fire District spokesman Dan Byrne said. One resident had limited the spread of the flames by pouring water through a window, he added.
Firefighters extinguished the flames, which caused no injuries but heavily damaged the kitchen area and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the home. They determined the fire began with a pan left unattended on the stove, Byrne said.
The home did not have working smoke detectors, he said.
It was the second house fire the Burton Fire District fought on Saturday, with help from several other departments.
In the early morning, Burton, Port Royal and Parris Island fire crews responded to a fire on Shell Point’s Cypress Street that seems to have begun in a carport and spread to the home. The location of the flames forced the family to escape through a window, though the blaze killed their four cats, Byrne said.
The family members were not injured in the fire, which firefighters believe was caused by an electrical problem.
