Beaufort, Jasper county vets holding rabies clinics in April
Veterinarians across Beaufort and Jasper counties are joining the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control to hold low-cost rabies vaccination clinics in April.
All dogs, cats and ferrets must be vaccinated under state law, and owners who need to vaccinate their pets can do so for less than $10 at clinics north and south of the Broad River.
More than 470,000 South Carolina animals were vaccinated against rabies in 2015, according to DHEC. Still, several hundred South Carolinians undergo preventative treatment each year after being exposed to a rabid or suspected rabid animal.
In 2014, a Hilton Head Island man strangled a rabid raccoon after it lunged and bit him on the leg in Sea Pines. Beaufort County was also among the 31 counties in the state with reported cases of rabies in 2015. In total, there were 130 reports of infected animals in South Carolina last year.
