Public comment extended for Beaufort’s new development code
The schedule for adopting Beaufort’s new development code has been pushed back a month to allow more public input, according to a city news release.
The process to adopt the new code started last year. The city hopes to create a more user-friendly document outlining what types of building and development are allowed in each area of the city.
Ten neighborhood meetings were held this month to review the new rules. Before that, a technical review committee reviewed the dcument.
A draft of the code was scheduled to go before a northern Beaufort County planning panel Monday. But some from the public wanted more time to look at the 282-page document.
After the public comment, the code will go to the Metropolitan Planning Commission in May, before City Council for work sessions and a public hearing in June and to council vote in July.
Public comment sessions will begin at 2 p.m. April 4 on the first floor of City Hall. Sessions will also be held April 13 at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and April 20 at 5:30 p.m.
A draft of the code, including committee and public comments, is available on www.cityofbeaufort.org by clicking the “Projects” link.
