Historic Beaufort Foundation celebrates 50 years
The history of Beaufort preservation will be celebrated during Historic Beaufort Foundation’s 50th membership meeting Thursday.
Cynthia Cole Jenkins, Historic Beaufort’s first director, will give a presentation on the city’s preservation history.
The public is welcome at the event, which starts at 5:30 p.m. at USC Beaufort Center for the Arts on Carteret Street. Preservation awards will be announced and officers and trustees elected. Tickets are $25.
Historic Beaufort started as a group of residents concerned by historic structures being torn down who first met in June 1967. Some of the organizers had saved the Verdier House on Bay Street years earlier.
The group began investigating properties believed to be in imminent danger of being torn down. Among their successes are preserving the Cuthbert House Inn, the Barnwell-Gough Mansion and the Anchorage House.
Within a year, the group had received permission from the city to document historic homes. They hired architectural historians to create an inventory of historically significant sites.
Initially, 314 buildings were identified. The city’s historic district was recognized in 1969.
