Boundary Street lane closures, shifts begin Saturday
Those driving on Boundary Street this weekend will see the first lane closures and shifts related to construction.
Concrete medians will be torn up and removed starting Saturday, and lanes will be closed or shifted from Neil Road to Greenlawn Drive. The inner lanes in both directions will be affected.
The speed limit on Boundary Street will drop to 35 mph during the project, which is expected to last two years.
The removed medians will allow lanes to be shifted for utility work, curb construction and stormwater drainage. Utilities will be buried to create what project managers say will be a safer, more attractive roadway.
Guidlines determine when lanes can be closed:
▪ Monday through Friday, lanes can be closed only between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
▪ Saturdays, lanes can be closed any time.
▪ Sundays, lanes can be closed between 1 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday.
During daytime work, lanes may be shifted, but four lanes of traffic will remain open.
Construction along Boundary Street started in January. Major work is taking place at the Robert Smalls Parkway and Boundary Street, where a new intersection is being built. A new road, First Street, is also under construction near Chick-fil-A.
The intersection will move west of Chic-fil-A connecting to First Street behind the restaurant. First Street will extend east to Hogarth Street, running parallel to Boundary Street.
