School board, SICs to discuss penny sales tax, four-day school week

The Beaufort County school board will hold a joint meeting of the board and School Improvement Councils on Thursday to discuss a one-percent educational sales tax and a four-day instructional week.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the media center of the Beaufort County School District office, 2900 Mink Point Blvd.

The district’s School Improvement Councils serve as advisory committees to each school’s principal and faculty.

Superintendent Jeff Moss has previously proposed asking voters to approve a 1 percent educational sales tax, which is expected to generate about $282 million over 10 years for capital projects.

With the board’s vote of approval, a referendum question would go before voters on the November ballot.

Moss has also briefly presented the board with an idea for a four-day school week, but the concept has not been discussed at length in a full board meeting.
