Robert Smalls mascot up for discussion Tuesday

A Beaufort County school board committee will discuss the new mascot for Robert Smalls International Academy at a meeting in Bluffton on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The student services committee meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Okatie Elementary School, 53 Cherry Point Road.

The school board voted in October to approve the school's new logo and the concept of a mascot based on the Civil War hero Robert Smalls. However, the board noted at the time that the school and alumni group, the Robert Smalls Association, had not yet finalized plans for the design of the mascot's mask.

The committee will also hear a presentation of the annual student service report, wellness policy and an update on the Springboard Alternative Program, one of the Beaufort County School District's efforts to reduce drop outs.
