Investigators find body in shallow grave near Burton residence

A woman's body was found by law enforcement investigators in a shallow grave Wednesday in Burton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

An investigation into the death of a man whose charred, unidentifiable remains were found inside a vehicle in Yemassee last December led authorities to the residence where the woman's body was discovered, the release said.

Investigators had reason to believe both the man and a woman were killed at the residence in Burton, the release said.

Joined by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Sheriff's Office obtained a warrant to search the residence, the location of which was not revealed in the release.

During the search investigators found evidence that a violent crime had recently taken place inside the residence, the release said.

The woman's body was discovered around 12:30 p.m. today, the release said.

The body is scheduled to undergo forensic autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, the release said.
Investigators from the Sheriff's Office and SLED were still on the scene later this evening, and the investigation is ongoing.
