Dreadlocks shield St. Helena man from serious injury during pistol-whipping assault

A man is crediting his dreadlocks with preventing serious injury after he was allegedly pistol whipped in a St. Helena Island front yard on Sunday.

A Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to a call of a fight on Legree Road and found the victim who said some "people" came to the residence to "fight," according to the Sheriff's Office report.

The victim said he was struck by a handgun three times on the left side of the head, He said he did not know who the assailants were, the report said.

"He stated that his dreadlocks helped cushion the 'blows' to his head," the report said.

The victim said he did not wish to press charges, the report said.
