Walmart shopping trip aimed at mentoring Beaufort high school boys

A group of Beaufort-area men and high school-age boys will meet at Walmart on Saturday for an event aimed at creating mentors.

The "50,50,50" event is hosted by Caleb Brown, who started Committed to Excellence about a year ago with his wife, Carizma. The plan is for 50 men to take 50 young men shopping for $50 worth of gifts, and for the bond to continue outside of the store.

Brown reached out to area churches and schools for volunteers and suggestions on which boys should participate.

Committed to Excellence aims to provide mentorship for at-risk high school-age boys. Brown, a Beaufort High School graduate, has worked as a counselor for Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs and the county's Alcohol and Drug Abuse department.

He has been working with area churches and schools to implement a Committed to Excellence program.
