Hanahan man wins $250,000 scratchoff at Ridgeland convenience store

A Hanahan man who bought a winning $250,000 lottery ticket at a Ridgeland convenience store said he has bought his last one, according to a news release from the S.C. Education Lottery.

Rory Mains won on a $10 Diamond 9s ticket he purchased at the Short Stop on Jacob Smart Boulevard on Wednesday, the release said. Mains scratched the winning ticket at the store; he asked the clerk for a pen to sign his name to the back of the winning ticket, shook the clerk's hand, and called his boss to ask for the rest of the day off.

Mains, a project manager for Family Dollar, had routinely stopped to buy lottery tickets while traveling for work the last seven years. He said his winning ticket would be his last.

"I'm done," Mains said in the release. "You play to win something like this, and when you win it, you should be done."

Mains said he did not know what he would use the money for, but he's thought about options like saving for his young son, paying off debts, or investing the winnings.

Two top prizes of $250,000 remain in the Diamond 9s game, at odds of one in 696,000.

Short Stop in Ridgeland will receive a $2,500 commission for selling the winning ticket.
