Fahey: 7 Fields of Dreams store opening Saturday on Lady's Island

There are seven rooms in Steven Kross' store.

Each one is named after a famous baseball field.

Therefore, Kross decided, a fitting name for his new venture would be 7 Fields of Dreams.

The store is opening Saturday at 12 Fairfield Road on Lady's Island.

It's hard to categorize it, says Kross, who worked at a sports merchandise retailer in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island for several years.

"There's nothing like this on Lady's Island," he said.

7 Fields of Dreams primarily sells sports memorabilia, but its inventory also includes fine art, antiques, rare books and jewelry -- among other miscellaneous items.

The idea for the store began when Kross lived in California.

"I found I could purchase high-end items from an estate liquidator at reasonable prices," he said.

He recently moved back to the Lowcountry and felt the timing was good to capitalize on what he believes is an untapped market on Lady's Island.

"I wanted a store that is not only (about) sports, but has universal appeal," Kross said. He acquires inventory from auctions, friends and retailers

Kross will also host events, such as a Monday poker night, at the store.

7 Fields of Dreams will open at 10 a.m. Saturday. Kross will raffle off a collectible item, and asks that customers bring a toy or book to donate to The Deep Well Project on Hilton Head.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
