Male body found in Jasper County; gunshot suspected as cause of death

A male body found in an abandoned house in Jasper County on Wednesday morning appears to have died by gunshot, according to Sheriff Greg Jenkins.



The Jasper County Sheriff's Office found the body in a house off Crabapple Lane in Ridgeland after deputies were called to the area between 6 and 7 a.m.



The man's death is being investigated as a homicide, Jenkins said. 



The body of the African American male has not yet been identified and was taken to the Jasper County Coroner's office.



Deputies searched the area of Pineland and in Hardeeville around the Levy community after calls of gunshots came in to the Sheriff's Office, Jenkins said.
