Santa Elena Foundation receives $30,000 grant for first exhibit
The Santa Elena Foundation has received a $30,000 grant to help it finish the inaugural exhibit at the Santa Elena History Center, set to open next spring in Beaufort.
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry provided the grant, which will help complete the exhibit on the second floor of the old courthouse at 1501 Bay Street. The second-floor exhibit will tell the story of the 16th century settlement on what is now Parris Island, the Europeans' race to settle the area, and the archaeological finds at the site.
The original exhibit was developed in Spain, according to a news release. A local team is working with The History Workshop, a museum design firm, to expand the exhibit.
The grant was part of more than $150,000 the Community Foundation gave to five nonprofit organizations, according to the release.
