Beaufort County School Board tables draft nepotism policy

The Beaufort County school board tabled discussion about a new nepotism policy Tuesday night to give board members an extra month to propose changes.

On Dec. 3, the human resources committee was unable to reach a consensus on how to specifically avoid conflicts of interest in hiring family members of the superintendent.

While the committee asked co-chairman Joseph Dunkle and school board chairwoman Mary Cordray to recommend a provision by Tuesday, Cordray said at the full board meeting that they were not prepared to do so.

"Because of our meeting schedule over the weekend and work and family and life commitments, we are not prepared to make that recommendation tonight," Cordray said.

As the draft policy reads, there are no restrictions on hiring relatives of the district's top administrator as long as he or she is not their direct supervisor. It's the same rule already in place for all other district employees.

The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 5 in Beaufort County Council chambers in Beaufort.
