Community Foundation of the Lowcountry awards grants to 5 nonprofits

Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has awarded $157,250 in grants to five non-profit organizations in Beaufort and Jasper counties, the foundation announced in a news release Wednesday.

Antioch Education Center in Ridgeland received the largest amount, a $75,000 grant to be used on a down payment to purchase a building that will house the Antioch Medical Education Center. The center will offer certificate programs for a certified nursing assistant, medical assistant, and a phlebotomy technician, along with other medical training programs, the release said.

The Santa Elena Project Foundation in Beaufort received a $30,000 grant to fund the Santa Elena Center's opening exhibit, which will focus on Europe's settlement of the New World, the release said.

The American Red Cross's Bluffton office received $20,950 to purchase smoke alarms and print materials for the Prepare S.C.: Ready 365 Canvassing project.

Sandbox, an interactive children's museum on Hilton Head Island, received $20,500 to help pay for a consultant to assist in developing the use of space for the museum--part of the Coligny Beach redevelopment project, the release said.

The Lowcountry Amateur Radio Repeater Association received $10,800 for the Digital Repeater Network, a program to upgrade and install repeaters to be used during emergencies and disasters.

The organizations received the grants at a luncheon held Wednesday at Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks restaurant on Hilton Head.
