Human skeletal remains were discovered Wednesday morning off of Pea Patch Lane on St. Helena Island, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators of the department's Crime Scene Unit excavated and searched the area for physical evidence tied to the remains, according to the Sheriff's Office news release.
A forensic autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina to determine the deceased person's identity and the cause and manner of death.
If the identity cannot be established through the autopsy, the Sheriff's Office Forensic Services Laboratory will attempt to do so through DNA analysis, the release said.
The gender of the remains is expected to be released after the autopsy, the release said.
Anyone with information regarding the remains can call Master Sgt. Brian Chapman at 843-255-3417 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.
