Sheriff's Office report: Burton man threw knife at dog

A Burton man pointed a knife at a neighbor's dog that approached him in his yard last week, refueling what has been more than a decade-long dispute between the neighbors, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Report.

The man was raking leaves when the dog approached and snapped at him, the man told deputies. He said the dog did not bite or touch him. He pointed a knife at the dog, at which point people visiting the dog's owners threatened to hit him with a baseball bat, he told deputies.

The dog's owner said the dog only barked at the man, and that the man threw the knife at the dog and cursed the neighbor when confronted about it. The dog's owner said the neighbors have been in an ongoing dispute for 15 years and that law enforcement is frequently called.

A friend of the dog's owner also told deputies the man threw the knife.

Deputies noted that the dog barked while they were there but didn't display aggressive behavior. The officers told the neighbors to avoid each other, and no charges were filed.
