Ridgeland woman killed, another injured in hit-and-run wreck

One woman was killed and another critically injured after the driver of the car that allegedly forced their vehicle off the road fled the scene of a Jasper County crash on Friday.

The Ridgeland Police Department has charged Tommy Brown, 53, of Ridgeland with leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in great bodily injury.

An officer saw Brown swerving on Old House Road, causing Jannie Lee Robert, 76, to swerve out of his way, run off the road and hit a tree, according to a report by Savannah television station WTOC.

Robert died instantly, according to the WTOC report.

Cynthia Vidette Howard, 56, was critically injured, the report said.

Brown was eventually stopped and arrested after he sped away from the crash at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, the television station reported.
