A Grays Hill man was injured Sunday after an armed man assaulted him in his home near a 1-year-old child.

Deputies responded to Shannon Lane around 1:40 a.m. to find the man's face "covered in blood" and his forehead swollen, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

Deputies had responded earlier to a nearby location for a domestic violence call between a man and woman. The man was never located, the report said. The victim said he had heard a knock on his door and knew it was the man involved in the domestic dispute, the report said.

The woman who was involved in the domestic dispute had taken her two children to the victim's home for the night, the report said.

The victim let the man in when he threatened to kick the door open. When the victim told the man to leave, the man allegedly pulled a pistol and struck the victim with it, the report said.

The two fought and ended up in a nearby bedroom where the woman and a 1-year-old child were sleeping, the report said. The fight ended when the armed man demanded his cellphone, and the woman gave it to him.

The man left, and deputies later found a magazine for the weapon, with 9 mm rounds, in the home's living room.

No charges were filed, but deputies identified the suspect and will seek warrants on charges of assault and battery, a felon in possession of a handgun, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime, the report said.

The victim was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment.
