Picture the dead of night on a lonely Beaufort County road. Maybe there's a sliver of moonlight. Maybe there's a cool breeze on the back of your neck.

That is where most of the old stories begin.

In Bluffton, the deep hum of a medicine woman and the curling smoke of a corncob pipe might follow you through Old Town. A lonely spectre of a little girl on Hilton Head might call out to you in the dark.

In Beaufort, almost every old home and shop has a story of the unseen, from Civil War spirits to a rude little jester.

This Halloween season, Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette staff writer Erin Heffernan collected the best local spooky legends, passed down like folk tales over generations, as remembered by longtime residents.

Read the full stories Sunday -- if you dare.
