St. Helena man accused of shooting at a residence with one inside
A St. Helena Island man is in custody after allegedly shooting at a residence with a semi-automatic pistol Monday morning.
Jakeyce Chaplin, 22, was charged with discharging a firearm into a dwelling after investigators were called to a residence on Edding White Road on St. Helena Island, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
When they arrived at the scene, witnesses told investigators a man known as "Sosa" had shot at a residence before he ran away into the woods.
One bullet hole was found in the siding of the home and a few shell casings during a search of the area, the Sheriff's Office said.
Investigators were able to find out that "Sosa" was Chaplin's nickname.
Soon after they had identified Chaplin as the alleged shooter, he called the department and said he wanted to meet with investigators about the incident, the Sheriff's Office said.
Chaplin met with law enforcement in front of a residence on Legree Road and was arrested. He was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and is being held on a $20,000 bond.
The pistol Chaplin is accused of using to shoot at the residence has not been found, the Sheriff's Office said.
One adult male was inside the home when the shots were fired, but suffered no injuries. Anyone with information about the incident or the location of the pistol can call Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Fraser at 843-255-3416.
