Lady's Island boy crushed by tractor, airlifted to MUSC
A 14-year-old boy crushed by a tractor on Lady's Island has been airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, officials say.
Members of the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire Department responding to a call on Meadowbrook Farm Road around noon Saturday found the 14-year-old face down near a small tractor, public information officer Scott Harris said.
The boy had severe head trauma and bleeding, Harris said. First responders tried to control the bleeding by applying trauma dressings as EMS arrived on the scene about one mile from Lady's Island Drive and the Sea Island Parkway.
The 14-year-old was treated at the scene and airlifted to MUSC by helicopter. His condition was life threatening, Harris said.
As of late Saturday a family member reported that the boy was expected to recover, Harris said.
It appears the boy climbed off the tractor, which might have then slipped out of gear, running over the boy and crushing him, Harris said. The boy sustained severe cuts from the tractor's blades on the back of his head.
