Ngome Collective boutique to sell African-inspired clothes, art at ArtWorks in Beaufort

"Vibrant hues," "natural elements" and "unconventional" are terms fashion designer Donellia Chives uses to describe her clothes and accessories.

Chives and business partners Mahoganee Amiger and Cynthia Stewart are hosting a grand opening for their new boutique Ngome Collective on March 14 inside ARTworks, at 2127 Boundary St., Suite 18-A, in Beaufort Town Center. Chives, who has been in fashion design since 1999, will feature her clothes, which she said are designed in the Africana style, using African wax print fabrics. In addition, she will be selling her handmade jewelry, made primarily with copper and wood.

"I'm very much about healing elements," she said. "Copper and wood have been shown to have health benefits."

Amiger and Stewart will also sell a "curated mix of vintage and modern fashion and jewelry" at Ngome Collective, according to a news release. Amiger, who is a songwriter, will offer "vintage sequined and beaded tops, satin evening bags, and other items that evoke Old Hollywood and the Jazz Age." Stewart will specialize in statement jewelry with a "wow factor," according to the release.

Stewart, a retired cosmetologist, said that as a former salon owner, she's always been in business and wanted to collaborate with Chives and Amiger to start up their self-described "lifestyle boutique."

In addition to operating Ngome Collective, Stewart said the three women are offering home visits to help coordinate wardrobes for those who need a bit of fashion advice. They will also book appointments for personal consultations at the boutique.

And if that's not enough fashion education for you, Chives said that styling workshops, a fashion show in June, and classes on how to make jewelry and clothes with African wax are planned for the future.

"It's a beautiful partnership, with fashion, art and culture," Chives said.

For the grand opening, the boutique will host a "Sip and Shop" event starting at noon March 14 and a "Royal Tea Party" event from 4 to 6 p.m.
