2-year-old critically injured; St. Helena woman charged

A St. Helena Island woman was charged with unlawful conduct toward a child Wednesday after her boyfriend's 2-year-old daughter suffered a life-threatening head injury, a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.

The toddler was injured at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday while in the care of LaQuana Chisolm, 26, according to Sgt. Robin McIntosh.

Calls for medical attention did not come until several hours after the child was injured, McIntosh said. Deputies were called to the home at about midnight, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

McIntosh declined to say how the child was injured, but the report listed a dumbbell as a weapon used.

The toddler was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and flown to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where her condition is listed as critical, McIntosh said.

Chisolm's boyfriend was at work when the injury occurred at his Seaside Road home, where Chisolm was with the toddler and her own three children, McIntosh said.

Chisolm was arrested at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday and taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center, according to the report. She was released Wednesday afternoon after posting a $50,000 bond, according to the jail log.

Chisolm has six previous arrests, including a 2010 charge for aggravated criminal domestic violence, according to the jail log.

McIntosh said she could not release more details about the continuing investigation.
