Mall at Shelter Cove loses three more stores

Three more stores are closing or have closed at The Mall at Shelter Cove on Hilton Head Island.

Home-products retailer Williams-Sonoma plans to close Wednesday and move to the Abercorn Walk shopping center at 5525 Abercorn St. in Savannah. A grand opening there is scheduled for July 23.

Store employees referred questions to corporate officials, who could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

Women's apparel retailer Coldwater Creek, which already has a store at Abercorn Walk, closed its Hilton Head store Sunday.

Company officials said in a prepared statement that they continually evaluate stores "from both an operational and financial standpoint" and decided to close their Hilton Head store after a recent review.

Several people who work at the mall said Shoe Dept. recently closed its store there. A Shoe Dept. official declined to comment, and mall officials could not be reached.

The three stores are among many to be shuttered in recent months at the mall, which owners have said they hope to remake into an open-air, mixed-use development.

Town manager Steve Riley said town officials continue to speak with mall officials about that idea but have not received formal plans.

Lenders last year sought to foreclose on the mall, but mall officials said then that the lenders agreed to hear the latest plan to revitalize the property.

Mall officials won the town's approval to add a movie theater in 2009 but could not get financing.
