Beaufort Co. adding speed humps to slow Shell Point traffic. When construction will start
Prepare to slow down: Nine new speed bumps are coming to the northern Beaufort County neighborhood of Shell Point, and construction begins Monday.
Contractors working for Beaufort County Engineering will begin installing the so-called “traffic-calming” measures beginning Monday and the work will continue through August, Beaufort County announced on Thursday.
Construction is planned at various locations on Shell Point Road, Broad River Drive, and Dogwood Street, according to Beaufort County. Work will occur between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Shell Point is a large residential neighborhood of a few thousand residents in unincorporated Beaufort County sandwiched between the Broad River and Parris Island Gateway. It lies just north of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and west of Port Royal.
The project includes:
- A raised intersection at Shell Point Road and Broad River Drive
- Nine speed humps: Five on Broad River Drive, three on Shell Point Road, and one on Dogwood Street
A speed hump is a rounded device built 3 to 4 inches high across a road to gently slow down vehicles to speeds of 15 to 20 mph without forcing drivers to come to a stop, according to National Association of City Transportation Officials.
Motorists and residents should be prepared for lane closures and are encouraged to use extra caution when approaching work zones, Beafuort County said.
Signs will be installed at each speed hump to caution motorists to watch their speed.
