A Port Royal police officer accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun this week, police said.

At about 2 p.m. Thursday, staff Sergeant Steven Colson sustained injuries to his hand and thigh as the result of an unintentional firearm discharge while cleaning his department-issued pistol at the police department, Port Royal police said in a news release.

Colson was transported by Beaufort County EMS to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.
