Beaufort County made the surprise announcement Thursday morning that restroom facilities at the popular Broad River Landing Boat Landing and Fishing Pier will be temporarily closed.

The loss of restroom facilities will be no small inconvenience for anglers who lug fishing gear, chairs and coolers onto the 720-foot-long pier to fish for whiting, drum, sheepshead, shark, stingrays and cobia.

While the fishing pier and boat landing remain open, said Hannah Nichols, a county spokesperson, the restroom facilities will be closed for a week.

The cause of the closure is a broken sewer main, Nichols said.

The Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority is working on the repairs, Nichols said.

Pipe break

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette reached out to BJWSA about the sewer main break but had not heard back as of 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Beaufort County-managed pier at 1050 Robert Smalls Parkway extends about 40 feet over the Broad River and runs parallel with Highway 170 west of Beaufort and Port Royal.

Its amenities include parking, restroom facilities and a boat landing.
