The South Carolina Department of Transportation is closing the Woods Memorial Bridge on Thursday at 7:15 a.m. for Habitat for Humanity’s triple crown race, the Turkey Trot 5K.

SCDOT will close the bridge starting from 7:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. to all traffic, vehicles as well as boats.

Runners will start and finish the race at Bay and West streets to bypass construction closures from the ongoing downtown drainage project. The course will take runners across the historic swing bridge onto Lady’s Island at the turning point of Meridian Road and then back.

For parking, Habitat for Humanity’s website recommends participants use the Beaufort Downtown Marina lot, which is free because of the construction.

Over 1,000 runners are expected to run in this year’s race. For those that missed the online sign-up, participants can register person at Grounded Running on Boundary Street Wednesday until 4:40 p.m.

Same-day registration will take place from 7 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. near the clock on Bay Street.

Proceeds from the race help build affordable homes in the Beaufort area.
